What’s in your CSA? You made it through the big heat! Time to celebrate!
I don’t know about you, but I’m so happy to see the end of this week! I’ve been spending much of my time outside. It’s mesquite harvesting time, and we’ve been busy at the Chavez Garden making sure everything the students planted survive the heat.
We found this baby cantaloupe yesterday while watering. I think we pulled it off! But wow! Was I ever ready for bed come sunset every day this week! Even when we do it right, our heat is challenging!
Judging by the list of goodies we got this week, it looks like Farmer Frank and friends did likewise! Being out there myself really drove home how hard farmers work, especially here in Phoenix in the summer, to make sure our food supply remains intact.
I thought it would be a good time to raise a toast to all hard working farmers and gardeners who were out there with us investing true sweat equity into their passion. Even if you weren’t out there, you made it through the week! So kick your feet up and enjoy a veggie bevvie. You deserve it!
Here are some nice recipes I curated from some of my favorite food bloggers. I’m including their Instagram handles so you can follow them for even more CSA inspiration.
And just in case you haven’t had the guts to look at the weather forecast…check it out! Little cloud emojis! Monsoons are acomin! Cheers!
Zucchini-tini Dedicated to the Crooked Sky CSA customer I met at The Market by Jennifer’s last week. The one who was beginning to wonder if she would ever figure out to do with all that squash. Claire Robinson of Food Network has hopefully solved your problem! @foodnetwork
Firecracker–I’ve been living on cucumber water all week. I think this recipe might be my invitation to dress them up a little bit. @creativculinary
Mexican Shrimp Cocktail–A non-cocktail cocktail but perhaps you’d like a little nosh with your bevvie! Here’s a nice rendition from Valerie’s Kitchen. @fromvalerieskitchen
Canteloupe Salty Dog–I don’t think anything gets easier than this cantaloupe salty dog from My Diary of Us! @mydiaryofus
Summer Melon Sangria–For your honeydew melon. Or your canteloupe. Or both. White sangria is one of my favorite summer drinks, and Laylita’s version is on my list! @laylapujol
Michelada–Raise your hand if you thought my tomatoes were going into bloody Marys! They are…kind of…the way we like to dress them up here in the Borderlands. Thanks to Vegan in the Freezer for this verson. Lucky for us, we can juice fresh tomatoes this time of year for this refreshment! @vegan_in_the_freezer
I’itois cocktail–If you read this far, just to see how I worked the I’itois into this, here you are! Trust me, if there’s a vegetable out there, someone has figured out a way to cocktail it. Credit and recipe here go to Epicurious. I think the purple I’itois bulbs will add an especially beautiful touch to this one. @epicurious
Farmer’s Choice–Farmer Frank is going to surprise us with one of our items. But no worries! I just introduced you to 7 food bloggers who surely have some ideas for you to customize the last section of your CSA!
I’m curious to hear about any other concoctions you created on your own. Send a picture and let me know what you did. The more all of us experiment, and share, the more fun we can have with our Crooked Sky Farms boxes!
